Giuseppe Borsalino, "u siur Pipen", was born in Alexandria in 1834. Starting out as a shop assistant and apprentice in his city, he later became a master hatmaker for Berteil in Paris. When he returned to Alexandria he opened his first laboratory with his brother Lazzaro.
